Cecil has an A. B. (Dartmouth, 1860) A. M. (ibid.,
1863), Ph. D. (University of New York, 1874), Litt.
D. (Williams, 1891), LL.D. (Yale, 1892). He was
Graduated from Appleton Academy at New Ipswich in
1856, and from Dartmouth College in 1860. From 1860
to 1864 he was principal of Appleton Academy at
Mont Vernon. He then began theological studies at
Union Seminary in New York City and continued them
in Andover Theological Seminary, where he was
graduated in 1867. He was ordained at Mont Vernon 1
May 1868, and became principal of Lookout Mountain
Educational Institution in Tennessee. In 1872 and
1873 he studied at the University of Halle,
Germany, and traveled in Europe. In March 1873 he
was chosen principal of Phillips Academy at
Andover, a position he held until his death. He was
president of the Dartmouth Alumni Association,
president of the Head Masters' Association of the
United States, president of the Merrimac Valley
Congregational Club, president of the New England
Association of Colleges and Preparatory Schools,
and a trustee of Dartmouth College. He is buried at
the Chapel Cememtery, Andover, Massachusetts. He
had lived at New Ipswich, New Hampshire, and
Andover, Massachusetts.
