The town record of his death identified him as "Asa
Bancroft, aged 82--10--17, son of William and
Mary". Asa Bancroft was one of the early settlers
in St. Andrew's Gore, later the town of Plainfield,
Vermont, where he bought one hundred acres on Lot
No. 7 in the 5th Range, 29 March 1797, from Jacob
Davis of Montpelier, Vermont. The deed was
witnessed by his cousin Harvey Bancroft (No 84) who
was already a settler in St. Andrew's Gore. Asa
Bancroft married about 1797 and settled on the
southern 100 acres of lot 7 of Plainfield,
Vermont". About 1801, as he and wife were coming
home one evening from Jeremy Stone's the wolves
began to assemble in their rear. The wife was on a
horse carrying their infant son, Tyler. They
hurried on as fast as possible, but the wolves came
so near that they abandoned to them a piece of
fresh meat that Mrs. Stone had given them and
reached home safely, the wolves howling about the
house as they entered it. He was frequently elected
to town offices having been selectman in 1815,
1816, and 1817." (Vermont Historical Gaseteer, vol.
