XIII--Father of Local Bancrofts

Joseph Jr. later established a homestead near the junction of Lowell Street and Bancroft Avenue and his sons, Joseph and Emery later divided his estate and built houses there which stand today on diagonaily opposite corners and considered to have been built in the early 1800's. Their combined estates covered a good part of the present Reading Highlands.
Another son, Timothy, was to have succeeded to his father's homestead. He married Lydia Parker, daughter of Daniel and Sarah, who owned the red house on Pearl Street, just beyound the school.
Another son, Thomas, moved to Lynnfield. The next son Nehemiah, settled on the Abraham Foster place on Grove Street and for many years ran the saw mill, known later as the Slab City Mill. He married Sussannah Beard and their daughter Eliza married Capt Charles Parker, a later owner of the red house on Pearl Street.

21--Statesmen, Soldiers and a Bard
We have told heretofore about the line of Thomases and the brilliant militay and citizenship record they left behind them. We have recounted the record of Joseph Bancroft. We do not find his son Timothy filling any important offices in the town. (he died young) In the next generation was Parker Bancroft who resumed military activity for the family through membership in the Parish militia company rising to the office of captain.
But it is the line on his mother's side rather than the side whence Francis Bancroft got his surname where we find the history of this house. Deacon Raham Bancroft received much land from his father and bought more until he owned a large tract on both sides of what is now West street and extending from Oak street to Woburn street. His homestead, according to the 1765 map was on the westerly side of the road while that of his son and succcessor appears on the 1795 map on the easterly side. There is ample reason for family traditon to state that the old house was torn down and the new one raised in 1789 and the legend just under the peak of the ridgepole on the west end of the house may be entirely correct and certainly can not be far wrong.
