New Jersey Cavalry 21, Dec 1863 at Jersey City, New
Jersey, 3 years enlisted. Mustered out July 24,
1865 as a bugler. Wounded Dec 11, 1864 at
Bellfield, VA. Shell wound left wrist and left knee
near Pittsburg, PA. Discharged July 24th 1865 at
Vienna VA as a private of Capt Owen Halis Company
"K" 7th US Cavalry. Also, Private of Company "D"
7th US Cavalry. Served 5 years in each company.
Height 5'6" Dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair,
Occupation : butcher
Joseph Marsh took part in the Battle of Gettysburg
and saw action under Grant and Sherman during the
Civil War.

Joseph Bancroft Marsh, Veteran of Civil War, Passes
Away at Fort Rice
Last rites were held at Fort Rice on Sunday for
Joseph B. Marsh, a pioneer settler and Indian
fighter of territorial days.
Joseph Bancroft Marsh, was born, December 14, 1844
Jersey City, N.J. . He was a veteran of the Civil
War and continued in the service of the government
until 1874, during which time he was sent to the
Dakotas. Later he went east for a couple of years,
when he again entered the service for five years,
at the end of which he took up land near Fort Rice
and continued to remain in the vicinity until the
time of his death August 22, 1919. On October 28,
1875, he was married to Miss May Fanning , and to
this union were given four sons and four daughters.
Arthur of Selfridge, Frank of Butte, Mt.; Hubert of
Fargo and Christopher of Selfridge, and Mrs
Josephine Clark of Fort Rice, Mrs Victorine Wells
of Morristown S.D., Mrs Clara Baker of Lovana, and
Mrs Evangeline Preston of Fargo, all of whom
survive with their mother to mourn their loss.
