At three years of age, Carlos Bancroft lost both
parents, and was brought up by Arthur Daggett of
East Montpelier. At sixteen years he went to
Massachusetts, where he learned the stone cutter's
trade and worked in the Navy Yards at Charlestown,
Massachusetts, and Norfolk, Virginia. He returned
to Montpelier, where he engaged with his brother
Watrous on the stone work on the second State
House, which was later burned. He was a prominent
Democrat, held many town offices, and was vice
president of the Farmer's Insurance Company and a
director of the Montpelier National Bank.
