Ebenezer Bancroft was a cabinet-maker by trade, and
had already located in Northfield when he bought
James Merriam's house and workshop, 5 May 1800.
(Bk. 14, p. 423, Registry of Deeds, Greenfield,
Mass.) The grantee in the conveyance was "Ebenezer
Bancroft, Jr. of Northfield", and the property was
described as "two-fifths of the original Petty Lot,
with the buildings standing on the same". A
quitclaim to "all interest in the property lately
occupied by James Merriam" was also given by
William Field and his wife Sarah (Petty). (Bk. 13,
p. 618, Registry of Deeds, Greenfield, Mass.) The
land and the buildings were in the town of
Northfield, not in Warwick, as stated in The
Register, vol. 95, p. 67, where the purchase is
mistakenly said to have been made by Ebenezer's
father, Ebenezer Bancroft (No. 41).
