1. "John, Lynn MA, perhaps with wife Jane, came in the James, from London April 1632 arriving 12 June in 8 weeks passage, died approx. 1637, leaving widow and sons John and Thomas. The name is spelled with r instead of n in the official vol. at Westminster, that tells how John and his wife were qualified to pass to New England and in England both forms are common enough. But in our country we had not for one century, if not two, such a surname as Barcroft; though in our print. Col. Rec. I. 108, we read that John Barcrofte entered into recognis. in L40 with Samuel Maverick surity in L20, conditional that Jane, wife of said John should be of good behavior, yet in the Index the n is given for r." We told in the previous installment of Joseph Bancroft receiving a house from the estate of his father, the fourth Thomas Bancroft. >From the description given in the settlement of the estate and the description given of the hous Joseph left in his will, we find that he died in another house. Moreover, we can find record of his selling the first house to his brother-in law,John Temple, Jr.
We conclude right there that he built a new house for himself about 1763 but on going back still farther in the records we find that probably he bought the house built in 1742 by his brother, the fifth Thomas Bancroft. (further in notes of Joseph and Thomas V)

Moreover, we can find record of his selling the first house to his brother-in law,John Temple, Jr.
We conclude right there that he built a new house for himself about 1763 but on going back still farther in the records we find that probably he bought the house built in 1742 by his brother, the fifth Thomas Bancroft.

This Thomas, in 1763, sold all his real estate to a distant cousin, Samuel Bancroft, Jr., who was then residing in the Winchester house, several rods south on West Street. Samuel sold Thomas's place less than a month later to Joseph who bought the buildings and most of the land in the vicinity but not purchasing some of the meadow and woodlands on the Woburn and Wilmington lines.

The homestead of Joseph Bancroft is particularly interesting since Eaton's history(can't read)rts. It is a singular fact that all the Bancrofts...belonging in Reading are the descendants of Lieut. Joseph. Whether this be true or not, it is a fact that Lieut. Joseph had many descendants and not alone of the Bancroft name. The house, too has been the object of much interest in recent years during the tenancey of Dr. ....Cheng, Chinese graduate of Harvard Medical School.

We say, then, that the fifth Thomas Bancroft built the house in 1742. It had been acustom in this line of Thomases for each to give his son Thomas land for a homestead but here the line was broken and the sixth Thomas received no such gift. Why Thomas sold all of his real estate in 1763, only about three months before his death is just a matter for conjecture, but we find him distributing his estate equitably in his will and the sixth Thomas is provided for in the bequest of the large Bible(to be his after his Grandmother Damon's decease) his father's shoemaker......(more can't read).unbroken line of Thomases came to an end.

But assuming that Thomas, the father, had built the house soon after receiving the land in 1742..some notable ancestry born under this roof. Thomas married Phebe Wardwell in January 1742 and and the gift of half his father's land came in March. The son Thomas was born in 1743.
